Chest Rub Recipe
Growing up, my family used Vick’s Vapor Rub everytime we were sick and of course that I used it as an adult because that’s what I was used to using… until I became toxin free and realized that Vick’s was not a clean product. I avoid anything petroleum based and I didn’t feel comfortable using Camphor and Menthol on my baby. I searched out DIY recipes and found one that I love. This recipe is adopted from The Hippy Homemaker but I made modifications with what essential oils I had on hand.
This recipe makes 8 oz. I pour it in 4- 2 oz jars for storage. You can omit the avocado oil and just use all coconut oil instead. My dilution rate is:
0.5% for 6+ months blend,
1% for 2+ years blend and
1.5-2% for 6+ years blend
Essential Oils You Can Use
Woodsy essential oils like fir needle, pine, cypress or spruce are great for giving relief from congestion, coughs and are also wonderful expectorants.
Chamomile is a natural antihistamine and anti-convulsant; it also has great calming properties and helps with sleep.
Cinnamon Leaf is naturally antiviral and antiseptic as well as a great decongestant. Since it’s a warm oil, it helps increase circulation.
Frankincense is an antiseptic and expectorant; it has a long history of being used for cold and flu.
Juniper Berry is highly antiseptic and works great for coughs and congestion.
Lavender is highly antiseptic and antibacterial. If you can only buy one essential oil, I would go with lavender. ;)
Marjoram (Sweet) is a great expectorant that helps open airways, it is also highly antiseptic and antiviral
Sweet Orange is highly antiseptic and antibacterial. Citrus essential oils help break up mucus and ease congestion.
Thyme is a natural expectorant and is highly antiseptic and antiviral.
I also love Ginger, Palmarosa and Copaiba Balsam.
